Why have you chosen to run for office?
I have always had a keen interest in local communities, actively supporting local community groups and initiatives in various capacities over the years. I am a firm believer that government at all levels is responsible to work for the benefit and well-being of its citizens, prioritizing policies and practices that result in healthy and accessible communities where services, programs, and supports are available, affordable, and accessible to all.
I have a proven commitment to Kings County, taking great pride in my community, and participating actively in ensuring that we live in accessible, engaging, and welcoming communities. I would certainly offer an experienced, positive, and active voice for the Municipality of Kings and the citizens of District #1.
What strengths would you bring to Council if elected?
I have a proven track record of being involved in community and providing leadership in many capacities. I have a lifetime of experience working with people, organizing and problem solving. Many would consider me an empathetic individual who listens and genuinely wants to serve. I am an active and high-energy person. I consider myself to be reasonable and logical in my decision-making. I thrive in working collegially and cooperatively. I feel that I would certainly bring an experienced, empathetic, and supportive role to Council, while not being afraid to advocate on behalf of my constituents and make tough decisions when required.
What do you feel are key issues in this election and how would you address them?
We are fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world- the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. We benefit from many amenities and privileges not necessarily available in other parts of the world. However, we also have our own challenges that we need to face. I could speak to many challenges such as environmental concerns, housing, land use bylaws, infrastructure needs such as water, sewage, transportation, and sidewalks, retention of youth, recreational and healthy living needs, etc. as priorities that require review, attention and action.
A significant issue that requires attention is affordability. Many families are facing stresses with the cost of living. Whether you are buying groceries, filling your gas tank, providing for the needs of your children, heating your home, or paying the rent, people are hurting. As leaders within our communities, we need to be fiscally responsible ensuring that public money is being spent appropriately and efficiently. Families cannot afford further increases. Family income is not keeping up with increased costs. Municipal Council needs to keep this reality at the forefront as they consider budgets moving forward.
Here are some reflections on various priorities:
Promoting Active Communities
Establishing facilities and programs that enable citizens to participate in an active and healthy lifestyle remains a priority.
Our children and youth deserve programs that enable them to be active and fully engaged in their communities.
More experienced citizens need programs and services that enable them to live independently and to feel protected and well-served within their communities.
Accessing Public Transportation
As our communities continue to grow, viable and affordable transportation that enables citizens to travel to access services within Kings County becomes a necessity. We must continue to advocate for public transportation for citizens of District #1.
Protecting and Respecting Farmland
The Annapolis Valley is an important agricultural community. We have a responsibility to support our farmers and to ensure that prime farmland is protected.
Enabling Accessibility and Diversity
Working towards fully accessible communities where all individuals feel welcome, respected, and can access locations and services as required is important. Let’s celebrate and value the richness all individuals bring to community.
Creating Proper Infrastructure
The infrastructure required within our communities must meet the needs of the people. This includes water sources, sewer systems, sidewalks, municipal roads, waste collection, transportation, etc.
Supporting Fire and Emergency Services
We are fortunate to have committed and skilled volunteers supporting our fire services. Supporting their needs in ensuring the equipment and training required is readily available to these men and women is essential.
Continuing to advocate and support our need for continued policing and medical emergency services through RCMP, EMS, and to support local health services remains a priority.
Promoting Local Businesses
A vibrant and successful business community ensuring that goods and services are available locally is important to our communities. Experience what District #1 has to offer!
Growing Local Tourism
The northeast corner of Kings County is blessed with incredible natural beauty. It is a strong attraction for many local people and tourists who choose to experience our incredible beaches, walking trails, local parks, the Bay of Fundy, our fine eating establishments, our art galleries, vineyards, music & drama productions, etc.
What is one message you would like to send to voters?
It would be my honour to serve the people of Kings County, and particularly the citizens of District #1. I have the experience, energy, passion, and commitment to do this job well. I have spent many years being involved and connecting with my community. I would certainly offer an experienced, positive, and active voice for the Municipality of Kings and the citizens of District #1 and I would appreciate your support!
