Why have you chosen to run for office?
I’ve chosen to re-offer because of the spark I have for community. I’ve spent the last 4 years listening to residents and learning both from staff and constituents. There is so much opportunity for growth and for implementing built environments to ensure all people feel a sense of belonging. While committed to growth we also must remain committed to the communities we serve and ensure a delicate balance in becoming more while nurturing what makes Kings County truly special. From investing in infrastructure, climate adaptation, active living and equity there is a lot of work that we have started over the past 4 years. I’m eager to ensure we remain committed to goals while also being fiscally responsible.
What strengths would you bring to Council if elected?
If elected I bring strong skills in communication. The ability to listen with a willingness to understand. I’m enthusiastic about community and engaging those within our communities. I have a willingness to speak up and think outside of the box.
What do you feel are key issues in this election and how would you address them?
Development- As we face exponential growth, we have to address how we do so responsibly. Protecting Agriculture lands and utilizing the land we have to maximum potential. Ensuring that growth centers are ready with proper infrastructure to focus on population density while maintaining the sense of community that makes these areas unique. We must continue to advocate for affordable alternatives to housing and supporting grassroots organizations who have worked diligently to address these needs. We also need to connect with developers to address what obstacles they face in our area and engaging with residents to hear what their needs are in terms of development or higher density options.
Deed Transfer Tax- As a growing Municipality, the third largest in this province, we must find alternative revenue sources to provide the exceptional service that residents are accustomed to. Deed transfer tax is an alternate source that could greatly benefit the growth of our Municipality either to provide new recreation services, to invest in aging infrastructure or address other key priorities. I think transparency is key to this by ensuring we have a plan for these funds before implementing them while also engaging with residents as we move through the adaptation of such a process.
Environmental and Climate Resiliency- Continue work on green energy projects while also ensuring we are engaging with residents on how we can best work with them. Ensuring we are educated on climate adaptations and prepared for extreme weather changes. Investing in alternative transportation options and investing in active recreation opportunities.
Roads- Many of the roads in Kings County are provincially owned and maintained. It is important as councilors that we advocate for the residents in our area to ensure that with changing weather patterns we are prepared to respond to emergencies as they arise. Regular maintenance is important to avoid emergency response, including proper drainage, ditching and vegetation clearing.
Community Engagement- Residents are passionate about their communities. As the government closest to the people, it is key that we listen to their expertise in their areas. The Municipality has a robust community engagement strategy however we still hear about how some important things are missing. I think this is something as councilors that we must spend time listening and learning from those we serve.
What is one message you would like to send to voters?
One message for voters: Get out and VOTE! Your voice matters and the best way to do this is to talk to potential candidates and vote for the one that can best represent your area.
