Where are you from and what is your background?
I’ve had the privilege of calling Kings County home for over 40 years. My husband, Richard (Dick) Killam, and I live in Hall’s Harbour, and we’re blessed with 4 children and 7 grandchildren. We’ve always been deeply involved in our community, and together, we both served as Municipal Councillors for District #3 for 14 years. Kings County has always been at the heart of everything we do.
One of my proudest achievements was my contribution to assisting families find affordable housing in Kings County serving as the first Chairperson to lead the creation of the Valley Fibre Network, bringing high-speed internet to our region. This initiative attracted businesses, supported education, and advanced healthcare efforts. I’m equally proud of the work Dick and I did in Meadowview, where, alongside engaged residents, we successfully closed the landfill, secured municipal water for the community, and established a community improvement fund.
My leadership extended to working with the communities of Centreville and Hall’s Harbour to form Community Development Associations, and in Centreville, to establish the Centreville & District Planning Advisory Committee.
I’ve served as a founding Director of the Hall’s Harbour Volunteer Fire Department, was the founding President of the Hall’s Harbour Community Development Association, and led the creation Centreville & District Community Development Association and Centreville Planning Advisory Committee.
My background includes running a business, mentoring women in entrepreneurship, and coordinating housing projects that delivered the largest number of housing units in any single county in Canada. For details visit: madonnaspinazola.ca
Why have you chosen to run for office?
This decision wasn’t made lightly. With the current Mayor stepping down, I felt now is the right time for me to step up. I’ve always believed in running "for" something, not "against" anyone or anything. I want to move Kings County forward, embracing the challenges we face with strong leadership, experience, and a collaborative spirit. My vision is to make Kings County a County where we say "yes"—to growth, to building homes, to starting businesses, and to protecting our environment. I’m passionate about leading a county that works for everyone, and I know I have the experience, integrity, and commitment to make that happen.
What strengths would you bring to Council if elected?
With over 14 years of municipal government experience, I bring a deep understanding of how to get things done. I value integrity, communication, and teamwork. I believe in positive thinking and strong leadership, and I always strive to act in the best interests of the community. My experience in governance, business, and community development has given me a well-rounded perspective, and I’m committed to bringing fresh ideas and fostering collaboration in Council to find innovative solutions. What do you feel are key issues in this election and how would you address them?
One of the most important issues we face is the need for better engagement between the County and our residents, businesses, farmers, and developers. There’s a gap, and I want to bridge it by creating an "Ambassador Team." This team will represent communities in Kings County and ensure that your voices are heard directly by Council and staff. I’ve experienced firsthand how community involvement can make a real difference that lead to successful outcomes. Meadowview, is an example, by engaging and working with residents, we closed the landfill, secured municipal water, and created a fund for community improvements. When we work together, we can achieve great things.
Other important issues include improve infrastructure, address the housing crisis, land use policies, protecting farmland, affordability, policing, volunteer fire system, roads, and preparing for climate change. I’m committed to work with Councillors, Staff and Community to modernize our approach to tackle these challenges head-on and build a better future for Kings County.
