Hants Border Wastewater Treatment Plant
The Municipality of the County of Kings remains committed to improving the performance of the Hants Border Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Action taken to combat odour in the spring and summer of 2025 greatly reduced the odour, but new concerns arose about noise from the blower equipment used to address the smell. A new, custom-ordered silencer was installed in September 2025.
The following projects are planned for 2026-27 to enhance the collection and treatment process and extend the useful life of critical assets:
- Construction of a new headworks building with upgraded screening equipment that will help prevent problematic clogs in air diffusers
- Inspection and cleaning of air diffusers in Lagoons 1 and 2
- Upgrades to lift stations to improve emergency operations, enhance pre-treatment aeration, and break down fats in the collection system before the materials enter the treatment lagoons
- Procure engineering design work required to prepare for additional plant upgrades
The priorities for 2026-27 could change based on unexpected events, emerging needs, and the findings of the engineering studies.
Significant Upgrades Completed to Date
- Construction an on-site service road and storage pad to support routine lagoon maintenance.
- Removal of biosolids (sewage sludge) from Lagoons 1 and 2 in 2025.
- Modifications to air compressors and piping, including the installation of a silencer on compressors used to boost the air supply to the wastewater treatment plant
Next Steps for Enhanced Operations
- Work with community partners and industry loaders to improve monitoring plans and develop actionable steps for assessing and managing materials entering the Hants Border wastewater system
- Monitor sludge buildup, refine data collection, and enhance proactive maintenance interventions, including investigating the potential for upstream pretreatment options that could reduce the source of system odours
- Continuously adapt monitoring approaches to ensure the best possible plant performance and environmental stewardship outcomes
The Municipality of the County of Kings thanks community members for their patience and understanding as staff work to address the current and future needs of the wastewater collection and treatment system serving the communities of Hantsport, Hants Border and Glooscap Landing. Future updates about the Hants Border Wastewater Treatment Plant will be shared on this webpage.
