Civic Addressing

The Municipality became involved with civic addressing when the Province announced that it would implement an enhanced 911 Emergency Response System in the mid- 1990's. All structures within each Municipality throughout Nova Scotia were assigned a civic number.

The addressing system, now in place, is updated and maintained by our in-house GIS staff. New numbers are assigned, maps are updated, and the necessary agencies/departments are advised of all new numbers and/or updates.

A civic address is necessary for:

  • 911 Emergency Response
  • Mail Delivery
  • Service Delivery
  • Utility Hook-ups

New civic numbers are assigned during the building permit application process. Building permits are obtained at Community Development Services, Municipal Complex, 181 Coldbrook Village Park Dr. Coldbrook. To inquire about the permit process, contact the Municipality at 902-690-6152.

Blue and White Civic Signs
Municipal By-law 96 requires the posting of civic numbers, requires the numerals and background be contrasting colours and requires the civic number to be highly reflective or illuminated. The best way to ensure compliance with these requirements is to use signs with white letters on a blue reflective background which are available for order from one of the following locations:

Aylesford District Lions Club 2160 Highway #1, Auburn 902-847-9374
Berwick & District Lions Club 250 Veterans Drive, Berwick 902-538-8656
Canning District Lions Club 1000 Seminary Avenue, Canning 902-582-7286
Coldbrook & District Lions Club 1416 South Bishop Road, Coldbrook 902-679-8304
Hantsport & District Lions Club 59 Main Street, Hantsport 902-684-9467
