Municipal Elections

The 2020 Nova Scotia Municipal Election was held on October 17, 2020. New Councillors were sworn in on November 3rd, 2020. A Special Election was held online in District 8 (New Minas & Greenwich) from June 17 - 24, 2023 as a result of the resignation of the Councillor for District 8.

In order to run for council (mayor or councillor):

  • you must be 18 years of age at the time of nomination
  • you must be a Canadian citizen
  • you must have been ordinarily resident (meaning your primary residence is here) in the Municipality of Kings for 6 months preceding nomination day, and continue to do so
  • you must have obtained a certificate that, as of nomination day, the charges that are liens on your property and the taxes due to the municipality have been fully paid or all instalments or interim payments that are due as of nomination day have been paid
  • you are not disqualified under the Municipal Elections Act.

In order to be eligible to vote:

  • you must be 18 years or older on the first advance polling day
  • you must be a Canadian citizen on the first advance polling day
  • you must have been ordinarily resident in Nova Scotia for at least six months immediately preceding the first advance polling day
  • you must be a resident of The Municipality of the County of Kings since immediately before the first advance polling day
