Lake Monitoring Program

The Lake Monitoring Program is a program administered by the Department of Engineering & Public Works, under the supervision of the Municipality’s Climate Change Coordinator. The monitoring program began in 1997 as a volunteer-led water quality monitoring program and our dedicated volunteers have been instrumental in establishing the Lake Monitoring Program as one of the longest-running citizen science programs in Canada.

The Lake Monitoring Program has evolved over time and currently involves the sampling of thirteen (13) lakes within the Municipality, including:

  • Armstrong Lake
  • Aylesford Lake
  • Black River Lake
  • Gaspereau Lake
  • Hardwood Lake
  • Lake George
  • Lake Torment
  • Little River Lake
  • Loon Lake
  • Lumsden Pond
  • Murphy Lake
  • Sunken Lake
  • Tupper Lake

The lakes in the program are sampled five (5) times per year, from May to September, by our volunteer network and Municipal staff for the following field measurements and laboratory-analyzed parameters:

  • Temperature
  • Water Depth
  • Secchi Disk measurements
  • Alkalinity
  • Chlorophyll A
  • Colour
  • Conductivity
  • Ortho Phosphorus
  • pH
  • Pheophytin A
  • Total Nitrogen
  • Total Organic Carbon
  • Total Phosphorus
  • Turbidity

The Municipality of the County of Kings would like to thank our volunteer network who have provided years of service to the Lake Monitoring Program – without their help, this program would not have been possible.
