Municipal Social Media Content Standards and Usage Guidelines

The Municipality of the County of Kings respects human rights and celebrates diversity. The Municipality’s social media accounts are meant to be safe public spaces for everyone to stay informed, share their thoughts, and ask questions. Respectful engagement is encouraged. Racist, hateful, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, slanderous, insulting, threatening, aggressive, or unlawful language or behaviour will not be tolerated.

The ground rules for respectful participation are as follows: no hate speech, no swearing, no bullying or personal attacks, no name-calling, no threats, no spam, and no misinformation. The Municipality reserves the right to monitor, moderate, and restrict activity on its official social media accounts as required when these ground rules are not followed.

Public Usage Guidelines

Individuals interacting with Municipality of the County of Kings social accounts are solely responsible for their actions, comments, opinions, and other materials posted. The Municipality welcomes healthy discussion, including respectful debates and thoughtful feedback. A moderator will only intervene to address a violation.

The following violations could result in the removal of content, comments, or posts without notice:
  • Messaging that is hateful, harmful or illegal
  • Posts and comments lobbying for political or religious purposes
  • Posts and comments containing sensitive personal information (addresses, phone numbers, email addresses)
  • Material that is likely to compromise the safety or security of the public or public systems
  • Advertising or soliciting on behalf of businesses or not-for-profit organizations
  • Comments or material that is repetitive, unintelligible or off topic
  • Posts containing information that cannot be verified or linked to a credible source
  • Copyrighted material

Moderation

The Municipality reserves the right to remove content that is inappropriate, offensive, off topic or unlawful without notice when it is discovered and report or block users who violate Municipal Social Media Usage Guidelines, the Municipality’s Communications Policy, and/or applicable provincial or federal laws, including the Human Rights Act of Nova Scotia and Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Moderation typically occurs at the discretion of the Municipality. The Municipality’s social media accounts are monitored periodically during regular business hours, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. local time, excluding statutory holidays.

The Municipality of the County of Kings primarily uses Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) to share important information about municipal matters in a timely manner. Follow us for municipal advisories and announcements, service notices, project updates, content supporting the Municipality’s Strategy for Belonging, news from Council Chambers, and invites to participate in upcoming engagement sessions and municipal events.

Live and archived video recordings of Council, Committee of the Whole, Planning Advisory Committee, and Public Hearing meetings are posted on the Municipality’s YouTube Channel
