Windows and Mirrors
Windows and Mirrors is a creative writing project that gives youth an opportunity to write about topics of their choosing that reflect on their personal ideas and experiences. The name of this project comes from educator Emily Style's (1988) view that as people read, they are either given the impression that they are looking through a window or into a mirror. For a Person of Colour, reading often gives the impression that they are watching a character's life through a window because their personal experiences are so different than what the characters are going through. There is little literature where People of Colour can resonate with the character and feel as though they are looking into a mirror. This truth extends to members of the queer/2SLGBTQIA+ community.
Windows & Mirrors Volume 1 lifted up the voices of Black and African Nova Scotia children and youth, culminating with the launch of their collection of stories in a published book!
